Meet the Maker
I’ve always been a bit of a “ooh, I could make that!” person. From decoupage and sewing to crochet, if I can have a go at making something myself, chances are I will. My love affair with crochet started when I was a little girl, when my grandmother patiently taught me the magic of turning a simple hook and a ball of yarn into something wonderful.
Fast-forward a few years and, well… I’m pretty much crochet-obsessed. There’s something ridiculously satisfying about watching a pile of yarn become something useful, beautiful and completely unique.
Every Whimsy Crochet NZ creation starts with an idea, a hook and far too much yarn, then gets plenty of care, creativity and a healthy dose of personality along the way. I make things to be used, loved and enjoyed — not just admired from a distance.
Of course, there was one tiny problem…
I kept making things. And making things. And making things.
Eventually, my ever-growing collection of crochet creations needed somewhere to go, so Whimsy Crochet NZ was born. I started by selling to friends, then friends of friends, and before long the word was spreading.
I originally began with amigurumi and have been lucky enough to donate many of my soft toys to Christmas fundraisers supporting children in need. These days, Whimsy has grown into a colourful collection of crochet goodies — from bags and accessories to cosy creations and quirky little treasures.
And where does all this crocheting happen?
At home on the Whangaparāoa coast, with my fiancée, two dogs, three cheeky birds and an ever-growing stash of yarn.
It’s a pretty good life.
